Thermally conductive materials, also called thermal pads, are used in electronics to help dissipate heat to ensure continuous effective operation. Thermal pads can be especially useful in many electronic enclosures and assemblies.

A thermal pad (also called thermally conductive pad or thermal interface pad) can be custom fabricated to whatever size/shape needed and is commonly used on the underside of a heatsink to aid the conduction of heat away from the component being cooled (such as CPU or another chip) and into the heatsink.

As a 3M™ Preferred Converter, we’ve seen customers get quality results by using 5519 silicone thermal pads and 5590H acrylic thermal pads.

Reasons to Use 3M Silicone Thermal Pads

The key advantages of silicone thermal pads are their high-temperature reliability and softness. Here are some additional details about silicone thermal pads:

  • Excellent softness and conformability
  • Up to 5 W/m-K thermal conductivity
  • Good dielectric strength
  • Excellent heat resistance with good flame retardancy

Reasons to Use 3M Acrylic Thermal Pads

With acrylic thermal pads, you get the benefit of using no siloxane VOC and experiencing no oil bleeding. It’s also lower cost if that’s a requirement for your needs. Here are some more quick stats about acrylic thermal pads:

  • Good softness and conformability
  • Up to 4 W/m-K thermal conductivity
  • Excellent dielectric strength
  • Good heat resistance and flame retardancy
  • Excellent cost-saving option
